The AWS bill arrived at 3:00 AM, and it was $14,000 higher than last month. I didn’t even have to look at the logs to know which ‘React Best’ practices you lot ignored this time.
I have spent the last 72 hours staring at Chrome DevTools memory profiles and AWS CloudWatch metrics while the rest of you were likely sleeping or watching “Clean Code” tutorials on YouTube that have no basis in reality. We are currently running React v18.3.1 on Vite v5.4.0, and yet, somehow, the engineering team managed to treat our production environment like a sandbox for unoptimized garbage.
This is not a suggestion. This is a post-mortem. Read it, internalize it, or find another profession where your “aesthetic” code doesn’t cost the company five figures in a single weekend.

SECTION 1: THE FINANCIAL IMPACT OF ARCHITECTURAL INCOMPETENCE
Let’s talk numbers, because clearly, the technical debt doesn’t scare you. Our infrastructure is designed to scale horizontally, but it is not designed to subsidize your inability to manage a component lifecycle.
The $14,000 spike was primarily driven by two factors:
1. API Gateway & Lambda Over-invocation: A “Data Fetching” component in the dashboard was re-mounting every time a user moved their mouse. This resulted in 4.2 million unnecessary requests to our /api/v1/user/stats endpoint over a 48-hour period.
2. Data Egress: Because the junior team decided to fetch the entire user object (including a 2MB JSON blob of historical logs) instead of just the counter value, we moved nearly 8TB of data out of our VPC.
If you want to achieve the react best performance metrics, stop treating the network like it’s free and the CPU like it’s infinite. We are paying for every byte you lazily request because you couldn’t be bothered to write a selector or a proper useEffect dependency array.

I ran a npm list --depth=0 on the production branch. What I saw was a graveyard of “trendy” abstractions. You’ve pulled in three different animation libraries, two state management wrappers, and a “utility” library that we already implemented in-house three years ago.

The heap snapshots from the production crash tell a darker story. The JS heap was climbing at a rate of 15MB per minute per active session. Why? Because someone thought it was a good idea to attach event listeners to the window object inside a component without a cleanup function.

SECTION 3: THE RE-RENDER DEATH SPIRAL (THE COUNTER DISASTER)
Let’s look at the “Counter” component that was supposed to be a simple internal tool for the warehouse team. This is the “tutorial-style” code I found in the repo. It is a masterclass in how to destroy a browser’s main thread.

This code is an insult to the profession. Because useEffect lacks a dependency array, it runs on every render. The fetch call triggers a setData, which triggers a re-render, which triggers another fetch. This is the “Death Spiral.” On top of that, the setInterval is never cleared. Every time this component re-renders (which is 60 times a second during the fetch loop), a new interval is created.
Within five minutes, the user’s browser has 3,000 active intervals trying to update the state. To reach the react best level of stability, you must understand that the useEffect hook is not a lifecycle method; it is a synchronization tool.

SECTION 4: THE FALSE IDOLS OF “CLEAN CODE”
I am tired of seeing “Clean Code” used as an excuse for over-abstraction. You’ve created a useUserStatsCustomHook that calls a useBaseFetchHook that calls a useAxiosWrapperHook. By the time the data reaches the UI, it has passed through five layers of unnecessary abstraction, making it impossible to trace where a memory leak originates.
In React v18.3.1, the reconciliation engine is highly optimized, but it cannot save you from your own “cleverness.” When you wrap every single primitive in a custom hook, you are increasing the overhead of the fiber tree. Each hook is a node in that tree. You are literally making the reconciliation cycle slower because you want your code to look like a poem.
Stop using “Clean Code” as a shield for not understanding how the JavaScript engine works. If you want to write react best implementations, you need to care more about the heap than the “readability” of a three-line function. Code is read by humans, but it is executed by machines. If the machine chokes, the human readability doesn’t matter.
SECTION 5: MEMOIZATION OVERHEAD AND THE FIBER TREE
I saw useMemo and useCallback used on every single variable in the Dashboard component. This is a fundamental misunderstanding of how React works.
Memoization is not free. You are trading memory for CPU cycles. When you memoize a simple array of strings, you are forcing React to store that array in memory and perform a shallow comparison on every render. For small datasets, the comparison is more expensive than the re-creation of the object.

We are using Vite v5.4.0, which has an incredibly fast HMR (Hot Module Replacement). But your circular dependencies are breaking the module graph. When you import UserCard into UserList and UserList into UserCard, you are creating a dependency loop that forces Vite to reload the entire page instead of hot-patching the changed module. This slows down development and masks memory leaks that only appear after multiple re-renders.
SECTION 6: THE DATA FETCHING CATASTROPHE
The second major failure was the “Data Fetching” component used in the global search bar. It was implemented using a naive onChange handler that triggered a state update on every keystroke, which in turn triggered a heavy API call.

If a user types “React Performance” (17 characters), this component fires 17 concurrent API requests. Because of network jitter, the 5th request might finish after the 17th request, overwriting the final results with stale data. This is a race condition that also happens to DDoS our own backend.
THE RECOVERY PLAN:
We are moving to a strict “No-Uncontrolled-Effects” policy. If I see a useEffect that doesn’t have a specific, documented reason for existing, it will be rejected in PR.
- Debounce everything: Use a proper debouncing strategy for any input-driven side effect.
- Abort Signals: Every fetch request must be cancelable. No exceptions.
- Primitive State: Stop putting massive objects into state. Store IDs and fetch the data from a cache or a normalized store.
- Strict Mode: We are enabling
React.StrictModein production for the next two weeks. Yes, it will double-invoke your effects. That’s the point. If your code breaks under double-invocation, your code is broken.
SECTION 7: THE “MAGIC” OF ABSTRACTION IS KILLING US
You’ve all become too comfortable with “magic.” You think that because you’re using React 18, the “Concurrent Mode” will magically solve your performance issues. It won’t. Concurrent rendering just allows React to interrupt a long-running render; it doesn’t make your inefficient code run faster. In fact, if you have a memory leak, Concurrent Mode can actually make it harder to debug because the render phases are no longer linear.
We are using Vite 5.4.0 because it is the fastest bundler on the market. But it can’t bundle its way out of a 1.2GB heap. We are seeing “Out of Memory” errors in the CI/CD pipeline because the test suite is trying to mount components that never unmount their event listeners.

This is embarrassing. We are a “Senior” engineering team, and we are being defeated by a Counter component.
SECTION 8: MANDATORY RECOVERY STEPS
Effective immediately, the following rules are in place:
- Dependency Freeze: No new
npmpackages without a 1-on-1 review with me. If you want to add a 50kb library to save yourself 10 lines of code, the answer is no. - Profiling Requirement: Every PR that touches a “Global” component must include a screenshot of the Chrome DevTools “Performance” tab showing a stable 60fps during interaction.
- The “UseEffect” Tax: For every
useEffectyou write, you must write a corresponding unit test that specifically checks for cleanup (e.g., ensuringclearIntervalorremoveEventListenerwas called). - Vite Optimization: We are moving to manual chunking in Vite to stop loading the entire admin dashboard for users who are just trying to log in.
If you are confused about why these steps are necessary, then you haven’t been paying attention to the $14,000 hole in our budget. We are not a startup anymore; we can’t afford to “move fast and break things” when “breaking things” means the site is unusable for anyone with less than 32GB of RAM.
I am going home to sleep for four hours. When I come back, I expect to see the “Counter” and “Data Fetching” fixes deployed to staging. If the heap size hasn’t dropped by at least 40%, we are going to start having very different conversations about the future of this team.
Modern web development has become a race to see who can pile the most abstractions on top of a simple problem. We are stopping that race today. No more “magic.” No more “trendy” tutorials. Just efficient, documented, and performant code.
