You leaked the future into the past. Every time the model looked at a data point from 2022, it already &#8220;knew&#8221; the mean and variance of the data from 2024. You didn&#8217;t build a predictive model; you built a time machine that only works in reverse.<\/p>\n<p>In the real world, we don&#8217;t have the luxury of &#8220;global scaling.&#8221; We have to scale based on what we knew <em>then<\/em>. But you wanted &#8220;clean&#8221; code. You wanted to use the high-level API because it\u2019s &#8220;easier to read.&#8221; You ignored the fact that financial data is a stream, not a static block. <\/p>\n<p>And then there\u2019s your &#8220;feature engineering.&#8221; You added a rolling 200-day moving average. We were building a skyscraper on a foundation of quicksand. <\/p>\n<p>We spent more time debugging <code>environment.yml<\/code> files than we did thinking about the actual economics of the trade. We were &#8220;navigating&#8221; (another word for the bin) a maze of dependency hell, trying to make sure that <code>torch<\/code> didn&#8217;t conflict with <code>tensorflow<\/code> because some legacy piece of code needed a specific version of <code>protobuf<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Machine Learning&#8221; revolution is just a massive exercise in curve-fitting. We take a high-dimensional space, we populate it with noisy data, and we ask a gradient descent algorithm to find a path to the bottom. But there is no bottom. There is only a series of increasingly shallow holes. <\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Alpha&#8221; we were looking for was never there. It was just the heat generated by the GPUs, a temporary fluctuation in the local entropy of the system. I hope they enjoy the heat. <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m going to find a job where the data is small enough to fit in a CSV file and the &#8220;model&#8221; is just a linear regression that I can explain to a human being without using the word &#8220;stochastic.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The heat death of the alpha is here.
